The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and less crowded paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers excellent acclimatization, stunning views, and a diverse range of habitats, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts. This 10-day itinerary ensures a gradual ascent, increasing your chances of reaching the summit successfully.

Day 1

Arrival in Moshi

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi.

The journey begins in Moshi, a lively town at the foot of Kilimanjaro. After meeting your guide and team, you’ll have a briefing and gear check. The excitement is palpable as you prepare for the adventure ahead.

Day 2

Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Elevation: 2,385m to 2,895m

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

Distance: 6km

Habitat: Rainforest

The trek begins at Lemosho Gate, where you’ll enter the lush rainforest. The trail is soft underfoot, and the air is filled with the sounds of birds and monkeys. By the time you reach Mti Mkubwa Camp, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and anticipation for the days ahead.

Day 3

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Elevation: 2,895m to 3,505m

Hiking Time: 5-6 hours

Distance: 8km

Habitat: Moorland

As you leave the rainforest behind, the landscape opens up into moorland. Giant lobelias and senecios dot the trail, and the views of the Shira Plateau are breathtaking. At Shira 1 Camp, the air is cooler, and the stars are brighter than ever.

Day 4

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: 3,505m to 3,850m

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

Distance: 7km

Habitat: Moorland

Today’s trek is gentler, allowing you to acclimatize as you cross the Shira Plateau. The views of Kibo Peak are stunning, and the sense of isolation is profound. At Shira 2 Camp, you’ll feel the altitude but also a growing sense of confidence.

Day 5

Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3,850m to 3,960m

Hiking Time: 6-7 hours

Distance: 10km

Habitat: Semi-desert

This is a challenging but rewarding day. You’ll climb to the Lava Tower (4,630m) for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp. The Barranco Wall looms ahead, a thrilling challenge for tomorrow. The camp is lively, with climbers sharing stories of their day.

Day 6

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,960m to 4,035m

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Distance: 5km

Habitat: Alpine desert

The Barranco Wall is the highlight of today’s trek. It looks intimidating but is easier than it seems. After scrambling to the top, you’ll trek through valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp. The landscape is stark but beautiful, and the sense of camaraderie is strong.

Day 7

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 4,035m to 4,640m

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Distance: 6km

Habitat: Alpine desert

The trek to Barafu Camp is steep and challenging, but the views are worth it. This is base camp for your summit attempt. You’ll eat an early dinner and try to rest, but sleep is elusive. Tonight is the night.

Day 8

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,640m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) to 3,080m (Mweka Camp)

Hiking Time: 7-8 hours to the summit, 4-6 hours descent

Distance: 17km

Habitat: Arctic zone to rainforest

The summit attempt begins at midnight. The climb to Stella Point is grueling, but the sunrise over the clouds is unforgettable. From there, it’s a short but emotional trek to Uhuru Peak. The descent is long and tiring, but the sense of accomplishment carries you through.

Day 9

Mweka Camp to Moshi

Elevation: 3,080m to 1,640m

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

Distance: 10km

Habitat: Rainforest

Transfer to Airport at leisure

Hiking Time: 3-4 hours

Distance: 10km
